Following is pointing out how to approach foam rolling as a beginner while presenting a video that assumes you know allot already:
Here Adam is assuming that you know that working directly into a knee or directly on the backside of it is only for professionals (so no digging around in there). There are other precautions like being especially careful when foam rolling in the lumbar region. Also someone new to foam rolling needs to know all basic principles of stretching: what to pay attention to and what to avoid.
Also basic anatomy needs to be well understood. So that people don’t get carried away with regions of the body which should not be mobilized. Staying away from digging into knees (front and back) and the front to the side of the throat, being very careful in the lumbar region (consult your professionals), not digging into armpit and groin, are most of the areas to not mobilize.
Also there are different characteristics for each muscle group that you are sporting. Some you have to start very easy or you could for instance make your jaw sore more than necessary. Other muscle groups if you don’t deliver more than light finger pressure, not much is going to happen releasing stubborn tight tissue.
There’s about a dozen foam roller areas to keep most major muscles in shape (not restricted/over tight). Cycle through them about 15 minutes a week and as needed.
From the beginning make sure you develop techniques to only let enough pressure down onto the foam roller to go up to your healthy pain threshold at that time. If something is impinging for instance when you lift your arm over your head, don’t force it (back to stretching basics). You know better than anyone else whether or not your body is accepting what you’re doing and the whole idea is to get your body used to accepting using simple foam rolling techniques. It’s not so easy when the muscle is super tight so your start is already built in not easy.
Having accepted that starting out and only for a short time it’s not easy and awkward and sometimes includes some health pain (for instance triggering a trigger point): then get courageous and get past the tricky part of it because it goes by quick. It’s magic.
